  1. Rate the ease or difficulty of leading with love on a scale of 1 – 10.

  1. How do you manage fight, flight and trust?

 

  1. Do you contemplate “why there is evil in this world?” why or why not?

 

  1. Read the Prayer found in Ephesians 3:14 – What stands out most and why?

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

  1. Why do you think it’s easy to think of Jesus’s disciples as a unified, homogenous group (when the reality was that they were very different in their life experiences and political beliefs)? 

 

  1. What sign or button do you need to lay down in order to follow Christ’s command to love one another? 

 

  1. Are we on the same page as Jesus? Can people identify you as a Christian by the way you love? 

 

  1. Why are followers of Jesus so divided today? 

 

  1. What does it look like for you to “stay the course”? Are any course corrections needed?

DISCUSS:

  1. The pastor added two words to the phrase he has been challenging us to consider…that of falling in love with love again. This week, he expanded upon it by saying we needed to consider “falling in love with the transformative power of love again.” How do those two words help you understand the challenge better? 
  2. In verses 10 & 16 of Philemon, in what two ways was Onesimus transformed when love was shown? We are all slaves to sin. Into what were you transformed because of Christ’s love?
  3. What do you think holds you back from loving unconditionally…from being free to love?
  4. Paul told Philemon that there were individuals watching his actions. We were reminded that the whole world is watching our actions as Christians. How should knowing that impact the way you treat others?
  5. When have you questioned the ability of God to do a transformative work? How does that bring into question the power of the cross? What Biblical examples can you think of as an illustration of the power of transformational love?
  6. Give a practical example of how you (or someone you know) have chosen to freely love rather than exercise a “right.”

PRAYER: Spend time asking God to show you any ways in which you are living out your rights rather than living out love.

Pray together the Prayer of St Francis:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,

where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

  1. When you hear this question what is the first thing that pops into your head? “Are you a loving person?”

 

  1. Compare and Contrast what love is not and what love is:

  • It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil 

 

 

  • Love is patient, love is kind. It rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.

 

 

Discuss the differences between what our culture calls love and the bible defines as love.

 

  1. How do you know you are loving well?

 

  1. 1 John 4:19 says “We love because he first loved us” – tell about a time you knew God loved you.

  1. Discuss the different ways in which the story of Hosea and Gomer points to the greatest story ever told, that of God’s love for you. Which aspect of the story “touches” you the most and why?

  1. Read Romans 5:8 together.  Dissect and discuss the phrases and ideas in this verse using points made in the sermon. How are you personally impacted by this verse?

  1. Discuss what it means to you to say that your faith is fueled by something…whether it is being right, anger, fear, politics, or something else. Practically, what would it look like to have a faith fueled by love?

  1. What would you say fuels your faith and how does it show the world the heart of God?

  1. We live in a world of broken covenants between nations, with people groups and in personal relationships. These bring about anger, hurt, revenge and divisions. How can you be a person who demonstrates what it looks like to keep a covenant and thus speak for God in a difficult situation?

  1. What do you think it means when Pastor Robert says, “We need to fall in love with love again?”  Very practically speaking, how might you look, respond and speak differently a week from today if you did fall in love with love again? (47:28-49:38)

Spend time thanking God for the different ways He has shown unconditional love for you. Thank Him very specifically for the ways in which He has provided opportunities for you to put His heart on display for the world.
